Minister Johnny Mercer’s outspoken wife accuses Carol Vorderman of ‘driving me up the f***ing wall’ being an ‘attack dog’ who is ‘inciting hate’ against Tories despite knowing ‘nothing about politics’

A government minister’s wife has accused former Countdown star Carol Vorderman of ‘inciting Tory hate’ in a public Twitter spat which saw husband Johnny Mercer describe the presenter as a ‘deeply unpleasant person’.
Felicity Cornelius-Mercer, whose husband is the Veterans’ Affairs Minister, said last night Ms Vorderman was a ‘celebrity attack dog’ and claimed she was ‘inciting people to hate all Tories’.
It is not the first time Ms Cornelius-Mercer has been vocal on social media – after her husband was sacked by former PM Liz Truss, she herself attacked top Tory brass and shared a meme insulting the then-party leader.
As fans rushed to Ms Vorderman’s defence last night, the MP’s wife also appeared to mock those struggling with the cost of living crisis as she quipped her ‘family estate does need some repair work’ when asked by a user if the couple have had to ‘downsize mansions’.
Speaking on Rachel Johnson’s Difficult Women podcast, Ms Cornelius Mercer said: ‘She [Ms Vorderman] drives me up the f***ing wall. It’s this idea of celebrity attack dogs that know nothing about politics.

The former Countdown host has previously called Conservative MPs ‘disgusting’ and a ‘lying bunch of charlatans’
‘It’s like inciting people to hate all Tories. You can’t blanket hate. This is what Vorderman seems to be doing.’
Ms Vorderman has previously called Conservative MPs ‘disgraceful’ and a ‘gaslighting, disgusting, lying bunch of charlatans’.
After the podcast, Ms Cornelius-Mercer said in a Twitter post: ‘And they call politicians narcissistic; Carol Vorderman is another level and playing the public for fools. Don’t fall for blanket hatred of any persuasion.’
Her husband responded by commenting a single throwing-up emoji.
One Twitter user shared the post and said: ‘Carol Vorderman is sticking up for millions. It’s laughable that you think you can speak for us. Your name is Felicity Cornelius-Mercer, it’s so posh it’s like a parody.
‘Cost of living hitting you hard, is it? Downsizing mansions? I think you’d better sit down, love.’
The MP’s wife responded: ‘I definitely don’t speak for you and all your drivel. And yes, the family estate does need some repair work; so a bit of sympathy wouldn’t go amiss.’
The spat spilled over onto Twitter after Johnny Mercer was yesterday criticised for an interview on Sky News, in which the minister appeared to say that UK military veterans who use food banks are doing so out of ‘personal decisions’.
Ms Vorderman shared excerpts from the interview in a tweet criticising his comments, to which the government minister replied ‘You are grim’, followed by a throwing-up emoji.
Last night she shared his response with her followers, asking: ‘Has he been hacked? Or is this now a new low Tory govt bar?’
Mr Mercer responded: ‘No. You’re just a deeply unpleasant person.’
His wife added: ‘Always count on Johnny Mercer to tell it to you straight. You really do seem like a nasty person.’
Ms Cornelius-Mercer has long been outspoken on her social media accounts. Last year she compared then-PM Liz Truss to a muppet after her husband was sacked from the Cabinet on the leader’s second day in office.
She wrote: ‘This system stinks and treats people appallingly. Best person I know sacked by an imbecile.’
She also claimed Mr Mercer asked Ms Truss who would do his job as Veterans Minister better than him, to which she is said to have declined to answer.
Representatives for Ms Vorderman and Mr and Mrs Mercer have been contacted for comment.
