Just Stop Oil protestors seek £3,000 for accommodation costs

Just Stop Oil protestors get out the begging bowl in bid to raise £3,000 for accommodation in London as they continue to bring capital to a standstill

  • Just Stop Oil have launched an appeal to fund accommodation for protesters
  • More than £2,700 has been raised by 40 supporters on GoFundMe
  • The group claims it costs £150 to house one person taking action for a week

Just Stop Oil campaigners have been appealing for help so they have somewhere to stay at night while they rest after protesting.

Elizabeth Garrat Wright is leading the appeal for funding saying the eco-group’s members’ accommodation, it’s understood.

The GoFundMe appeal says campaigners need £150 to fund the costs to bed down for the night for a week.

Just Stop Oil is planning protests in the north of the country this month.

Supporters of the eco activist group have been seeking funding to pay for accommodation

The crowdfunding appeal was set up with a target of £2,000.

This was then upped to £3,000 with any extra money paying for protestors transport and food.

Yesterday, £2,776 has been raised after 40 supporters donated – with one giving £314.

The appeal called ‘Northern Just Stop Oil Supporters’ was set up an organiser called ‘Banana Bread’

It read: ‘We are trying to see if we might raise some money to ensure supporters of the Just Stop Oil campaign, committed to taking action later in October 2022, have a proper place to stay.

‘It costs approximately £150 to house one person taking civil resistance action for a week.

‘The North is eager to participate at full strength, but we’re struggling to find the funds to provide ourselves with accommodation.

‘By donating to this GoFundMe, you are directly supporting another person committed to stepping into civil resistance.

The activists have been causing major disruption with a range of protests across London

Police have been trying to remove activists, such as this woman, from a protest near the Victoria and Albert Museum on Cromwell Road earlier today

Just Stop Oil said any money left over from their appeal will be lodged with the organisation’s central fun

‘Their actions are the best chance we have to preserve a livable world for all.

‘Can you help us? Any amount is welcome. Thank you.’

An update later read: ‘Wow! Thank you to everyone that has chipped in so far.

‘We achieved the initial goal of £2,000 in less than 12 hours.

‘We now have plenty enough to book ONE accommodation but would like to try and get one more so we have extended the goal to £3,000.

‘Any extra beyond that will be added to the action teams’ float money and be used for food, and for transport to and from the action sites.

‘All money leftover when action is completed will be sent to the Just Stop Oil central fund.

‘Thank you for your generosity.’
