A body has been found by police investigating the disappearance of a mother-of-two who went missing a week ago.

Katie Kenyon, 33, was last seen getting into a Ford Transit van in Burnley, Lancashire.

A sighting of the large grey van led officers to prioritise a search in a wooded area in the Forest of Bowland, a western outlier of the Pennines, and they made the grim discovery on Friday night.

Andrew Burfield, 50, from Burnley, has been charged with the young mum's murder.

Lancashire Police said on Tuesday that the investigation had shifted from a missing person to homicide.

The police said: "While Katie has not yet been found, and the search for her is continuing, detectives are now working on the basis that she is sadly no longer alive."

Search teams with more than 60 trained officers from Lancashire, North Wales, Merseyside and Greater Manchester Police, with specialist dogs had been combing the Gisburn Forest over the past few days.

The tip off about the van sighting from a member of the public saw them shift their focus to a new area in the Forest of Bowland.

Police said a woman matching Katie's description was seen getting into a silver Ford Transit van with a man, outside an address in Todmorden Road, Burnley, at around 9.30am on Friday.

The van, with the number plate MT57 FLC, is then believed to have travelled to Gisburn Forest near the Bolton-by-Bowland area.

Katie's family continue to be supported by specially trained officers, Lancashire Police said.

Her family have passed on their thanks for all the well-wishing messages but have asked people to respect their privacy at this time, they added.
