London Bridge station evacuated by armed police and trains diverted after suspicious item found on board train

ARMED cops evacuated London Bridge station and trains were diverted away after a 'suspicious item' was found in a carriage.

Witnesses were seen running from the terminal after police were called this afternoon, and officials at Southeastern Railway ordered commuters to keep away.

Witnesses reported seeing "multiple" helicopters in the sky above the station in Southwark, south London.

Meanwhile, commuters say they were forced to walk along the tracks when the train was halted.

Cops have confirmed they were called to reports of a suspicious item on a train.

Crowds gathered outside the station, while police with sniffer dogs were seen inside.

The station has since reopened.

Rail travellers took to social media to share reports from the scene.

Eastenders actor Daniel Coonan wrote: "Strange scenes in London.

"The police are everywhere evacuating the station and forcing people off the platforms."

One commuter tweeted: "Stay away from London Bridge.

"Stuck on a train outside as they have found a suspect device.

"Having to walk off the train on the tracks to get away from the station."

Another claimed that some passengers "started arguing with the police when they were asked to evacuate".

And a woman who was on the train where the package was found said: "Calmly minding my business when police board my train and say there’s a suspicious package in the carriage next to mine and that I have to evacuate the train.

"Then we had to evacuate the platform. Then we had to evacuate the station."

A spokesperson from the train company said: "Emergency services are dealing with an incident at London Bridge currently.

"The station is currently closed, and trains are not stopping until further notice."

Cops from British Transport Police said: "Officers were called to London Bridge station at 12.33pm following reports of a suspicious item on board a train.

"The station has been closed as a precaution while specialist officers assess the item.

"The station has been evacuated so that emergency services can deal with the situation in hand.

"Please follow instructions from emergency services."

The station has since reopened, cops say.
