Man, 49, charged over death of Emma Caldwell 17 YEARS after body found in woodland

A MAN has been charged over the death of a sex worker who vanished from a Glasgow street 17 years ago.

Emma Caldwell, 27, was last seen between 1.20am and 1.30am on April 5 2005.

She was reported missing by her family five days later.

Her naked body was found in woodland in Biggar, South Lanarkshire on May 8 that year.

Cops in Scotland said today that a 49-year-old man arrested in the Glasgow area on Thursday has now been charged in connection with her death.

The suspect remains in custody.

He is due to appear at Glasgow Sheriff Court on Monday.

Speaking yesterday, Detective Superintendent Graeme Mackie said: "This is a complex and challenging investigation and I would like to thank everyone involved for their efforts in getting us to this point of a man being arrested earlier today.

“Emma’s family, in particular her mother Margaret, have shown incredible resilience and determination since her death in 2005 and I would like to pay tribute to that today.

“We have remained in close contact with them during this investigation and officers have updated Margaret on this significant development.

MAN, 49, DUE IN THE DOCK

“The investigation into Emma’s death continues and I would urge anyone with information, no matter how small or insignificant they might think it is, to please come forward and speak to us."

Emma's mum Margaret has worked tirelessly to reopen the case after the original probe collapsed.

Police began re-investigating Emma's death in 2015 and a detailed forensic search of the woods was carried out two years later.

Aamer Anwar, solicitor for the Caldwell family, said: "I wish to pay tribute to Margaret Caldwell, a mother who through the love of a child has never given up in her struggle for justice."

He said the investigation continues, and asked anyone with information to contact detectives.

"I would also ask that Margaret's privacy and that of her family is respected," he said.
