Man admits ‘hearing voice telling him to kill grandparents on Boxing Day’

A man has admitted that he heard “a voice” that he attributed to a horror film he watched more than 80 times before stabbing his grandparents to death on Boxing Day.

Tobyn Salvatore stabbed his grandparents, Denis and Mary Fell, to death in a sick and prolonged attack on Boxing Day 2021 in their home in Scotland following an argument over a Christmas hamper, a court has heard.

Thenow 21-year-old was originally going to stand trial for murder but pleaded guilty to culpable homicide due to diminished responsibility, which carries a lighter sentence, the BBC reports.

The High Court in Livingston, Scotland, was previously told that he used two knives, an 8in, ultra-sharp kitchen knife and a 10in butcher's knife, to slaughter his grandparents, both 73, following a heated row over a hamper he had taken to his room.

He struck Denis on the head and body with a knife, and repeatedly stabbed Mary, severing her hand from her arm.

After calmly taking a bath following the brutal attack, he went to his local police station and nonchalantly told cops: "I've murdered someone – my grandparents".

Cops quickly forced their way into the couple’s home to find Denis’ body in the hallway, while Mary’s body was in the living room.

Her severed hand was found in the hallway to the right of her husband's foot and a piece of her scalp was recovered from the kitchen floor.

After handing himself into the police following the killing, he later told prison shrinks that he attributed the voice he heard telling him to kill his grandparents to the “Woman in Black,” the iconic horror film that he admitted he had watched more than 80 times.

The killer had his name legally changed from Jay Fell in 2016 to pay tribute to fictional brothers Damon and Stefan Salvatore from the Vampire Diaries TV series.

Salvatore, a very religious person, also told doctors: "I believe if my grandparents died, they would be resurrected."

Donald Findlay KC, defending the killer, told the court that a psychiatrist who examined Salvatore had been "very clearly of the view that this was undoubtedly a case of diminished responsibility".

While he will be sentenced at the end of September for his crimes, the judge in charge of his case has ordered him to spend time at the State Hospital in Carstairs, South Lanarkshire, while a further psychiatric report is prepared.
