A man has been charged for allegedly making online threats against Stan Grant following the Indigenous journalist’s announcement to step down from the ABC’s Q+A last week.
Officers from Sydney City Police Area Command said they had received a report on Tuesday of alleged online threats made against Grant. Following inquiries, they arrested a 41-year-old man in Fairfield Heights in Sydney’s west at about 6.40pm on Wednesday.

The man was taken to Fairfield police station where he was charged with use of a carriage service provider to threaten serious harm and of using a carriage service to menace, harass or offend.
The man was granted bail to appear before Fairfield Local Court on May 31.
Grant, a 59-year-old Wiradjuri man from the Griffith region in NSW and a triple Walkley Award winner, wrote a piece published to ABC websites on Friday explaining his decision to quit Q+A.
He said exhaustion from racist abuse on social media, particularly following his coverage of the coronation of King Charles III, was a major part of the TV host’s decision.
“Racism is a crime. Racism is violence. And I have had enough,” Grant wrote.
On Monday, during his final Q+A appearance, an emotional Grant said he needed to take time out and his soul was hurting.
“I’m not walking away for a while because of racism – we get that far too often. I’m not walking away because of social media hatred. I need a break from the media. I feel like I’m part of the problem. And I need to ask myself how or if we can do it better,” he said.
ABC managing director David Anderson told Senate estimates on Wednesday he was concerned about the abuse the broadcaster’s Indigenous staff may face in the lead-up to the Voice referendum and that support structures were “not enough and we’ve fallen short, certainly of late”.
