Man dies after being shot by Weld County deputy

A man has died after being shot by a sheriff’s deputy Friday night, according to Weld County officials.

Deputies responded to a report of a disturbance about 5:43 p.m. Friday in the 26000 block of County Road 70. They encountered a female who exited a residence and told deputies she was assaulted by a man, who was still inside the home, according to a statement from county officials. The woman told deputies the man had access to firearms.

Once the man exited the residence, he fled the area on foot. Deputies used a less-lethal bean bag to attempt to arrest the suspect but were unsuccessful, the statement said. After a foot pursuit, the man fired at least one round at the pursuing deputies, who returned fire and struck the suspect.

The man was transported to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead, county officials said. No deputies were injured.

The incident is being investigated by the 19th Judicial District. Neither the name of the deceased nor the deputies involved has been released.
