This is the horrifying moment a man shoots a woman in the head at close range during an apparently friendly chat in Russia.

Denis Yegorov, 42, is seen pointing the barrel of the gun at an unidentified woman before shooting her and leaving a hole in her forehead in footage captured by a surveillance camera in Moscow on Friday.

The shocked woman touches her wound then looks down at her hands, which are covered in blood, as another woman looks on aghast.

Moments before the shooting, the man pointed a pistol at the head of the other woman, who pushed his hand aside, before turning towards the victim.

The victim was rushed to hospital where she was reportedly admitted to the department of neurosurgery.

Doctors said the frontal bone of her skull remained intact, but that the tissues were badly damaged and that restorative therapy will take a long time.

The woman is under constant medical monitoring but is not currently in a critical condition, medics said.

Police have launched a criminal investigation against Yegorov, who could face up to seven years in jail if convicted for hooliganism.

It is not clear so far what gun Yegorov used, with one news source stating it was a starting pistol.

Starting pistols are loaded with blanks, which can still inflict damage, particularly if fired at close range as was the case in the Moscow incident.

Examinations to determine the exact type of the weapon are underway, according to the police.

Yegorov (pictured) is a figure skating coach at a local children’s sports school. Local media quoted Yegorov’s clients as saying that he is a ‘polite, responsible and punctual person’. However, colleagues said he has often behaved aggressively towards them

The motive for the shooting is also unknown, but there are suggestions it was the result of a prank gone wrong. The victim looked on smiling when Yegorov first pointed the gun towards the other woman and did not appear to attempt to move when the gun was aimed at her

The victim looked on smiling when Yegorov first pointed the gun towards the other woman and did not appear to attempt to move when the gun was aimed at her.

The other woman seen in the footage, who has also not been identified, told local media: ‘We were chatting and joking when he pointed the gun at her, asked if she was scared of it and shot.’

The woman added that she and the victim had come to arrange a personal lesson with Yegorov, who works as a figure skating coach at a local children’s sports school.

Denis Yegorov was a member of the Russian junior national figure skating team. He took part in the World Junior Championship in 1999.

According to sources, he was previously convicted of drunk driving.
