Two new mass COVID-19 vaccination sites will open Wednesday in Brooklyn and Queens as part of a federal partnership with New York — and there are still plenty of appointment slots available, Gov. Cuomo said Sunday.
Medical workers will be able to give out up to 3,000 jabs daily at the new Medgar Evers College in Crown Heights and York College in Jamaica, said Cuomo, who urged New Yorkers to get vaccinated at the sites for at least the second time this week.
“The vaccine is the weapon that will win the war, and we are working with our federal partners to make sure hard-hit communities have access to these life-saving shots,” Governor Cuomo said in a press release. “I encourage all eligible New Yorkers from these communities to schedule an appointment and get vaccinated.”
Cuomo has said the doses will come from the feds separately from the state’s weekly allotment.
State officials did not immediately respond to a question from The Post on Sunday about whether they could guarantee the new local state-federal sites would get the doses they are promising amid some severe local vaccination delivery snafus.
The new inoculation spots — open by appointment to eligible New Yorkers with nearby zipcodes from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. — are part of a federal program aimed at helping hard-hit and hard-to-reach communities on a larger scale.
By contrast, 1,000 shots a day are being administered at the state-run Javits Center, officials have said.
“There are still tons of appointments available at the new FEMA mega vaccination sites at Medgar Evers College in Central Brooklyn and York College in Southeast Queens,” city councilman Mark Levine ((D-Manhattan) tweeted Sunday.
Other mass federal-state vaccination sites are also set to open in other parts of the Empire State on March 3. They include the Delavan Grider Community Center in Buffalo, the Former Kodak Hawkeye Parking Lot in Rochester, the Washington Avenue Armory in Albany and the New York National Guard Amory in Yonkers.
Eligible New Yorkers can schedule appointments for the Brooklyn and Queens sites by using New York’s “Am I Eligible” Web site or by calling the state’s COVID-19 Vaccination Hotline at 1-833-NYS-4-VAX (1-833-697-4829).
The two new locations in Queens and Brooklyn join a list of other mass city and state vaccination sites in the Big Apple that include Yankee Stadium in The Bronx and Citi Field in Queens.
