Meghan made ‘one glaring omission’ in King Charles letter statement, says critic

Meghan Markle has felt the need to speak out over claims about the reason she won’t be attending the Coronation but her statement does not quite deny the leaks, says one expert.

After a report that a letter that the Duchess of Sussex sent expressing concern over “unconscious bias” in the Royal Family is part of the reason she is not attending King Charles’s coronation, journalist Omid Scobie, who is known to be close to the Sussexes, said the duchess was “not thinking about correspondence from two years ago”.

She also accused “tabloid media and various royal correspondents” of creating an “exhausting circus”.

But – says one royal correspondent – there’s “one glaring omission” from that statement.

The original claim about Meghan’s letter came from the Daily Telegraph with a source claiming that after she sent the letter to Prince Charles, as he then was, she did not receive a satisfactory response to her concerns.

The allegation prompted a rare response from the duchess, who hit back at the report.

Scobie’s statement read in full: “The Duchess of Sussex is going about her life in the present, not thinking about correspondence from two years ago related to conversations from four years ago.

"Any suggestions otherwise is false and frankly ridiculous. We encourage tabloid media and various royal correspondents to stop the exhausting circus that they alone are creating.”

However, royal-watcher Daniela Elser, writing for News.com.au, points out: “There is something decidedly curious about that Meghan statement in that there is one thing missing – an actual denial”.

The language of the duchess’s statement would have been carefully considered, Daniela says, and so “it seems a strange omission or oversight to not include a clear rejection of the Telegraph story given”.

She adds that the denial just confirms, according to her, the fact that there had been a series of letters between Montecito and The Palace in 2021.

Prince Harry had himself denied that the Royal Family was racist, telling ITV’s Tom Brady that there was “concern” about Archie’s skin colour."

Asked if he would describe that as racist, Harry replied: "I wouldn't, not having lived within that family."

He stressed: "The difference between racism and unconscious bias, the two things are different”.
