Meghan Markle’s fashion claim ‘demolished’ at Kate Middleton’s Christmas concert

Kate Middleton's much-talked-about Christmas concert last night (December 15) at Westminster Abbey appears to have dispelled one of the claims made by Meghan Markle in the controversial Netflix documentary about her and Prince Harry's lives.

During the show, Meghan talked about royal fashion and various dress codes you have to abide by.

In the segment, featured in the final three episodes which dropped yesterday, she claimed that royals couldn't be seen to be wearing the same colour as the-late Queen, or as each other.

She said: “To my understanding, you can’t ever wear the same colour as Her Majesty, if there’s a group event.

“But then you also should never be wearing the same colour as one of the other more senior members of the family.

“So I was like, ‘Well, what’s a colour that they’ll probably never wear?’ Camel? Beige? White

“So I wore a lot of muted tones, but it also was so I could just blend in.”

However, during the carol concert, which is set to be shown on ITV on Christmas Eve, several female royals appeared to scupper those claims – and it was noticed by critic Daniela Elser.

While entering the event, many of the more high-profile Royals appeared to have coordinated their colours.

Kate Middleton, Zara Tindal, Pippa Middleton – granted, not a royal, but still high profile – Sophie Wessex and others were all wearing simliar outfits, with the first three wearing matching burgundy-colour coats.

Short clips from inside the event also show that once the coats were taken off, the dresses were all very simliar.

And this, Elser claims in news.com.au, was a “defiant and loaded moment”.

She said: “To Meghan’s telling, to be a lowlier working member of the royal family, there was an expectation she wouldn’t tread on anyone’s higher-ranked toes and that she was expected to, sartorially, know where she fitted in the pecking order. Here was even more grist for the ever-chugging grievance mill – just another way that Meghan’s vibrancy was squashed by the monarchy.

“Which is what makes Thursday’s carol concert such a defiant and loaded moment.

“Whether Kate, Zara, Camilla, Sophie, Beatrice, Eugenie and Pippa had some sort of WhatsApp group where they co-ordinated their sartorial pincer movement or they all turned up accidentally wearing mirror-image versions of each other’s coats, who knows?

“The bottom line is the same – simply by dint of what they wore, the women of the Royal Family have just managed to demolish assertion.

“The power of fashion, huh?”

It was also notable that the male counterparts of the women mentioned were all wearing similarly dark coats.
