'Men should lose their driving licence for kerb crawling women'

Following women too closely in the street should be a CRIMINAL offence and kerb crawlers should have their driving licences taken away, says MP Harriet Harman

  • Ms Harman says even girls walking home from school are ‘hassled’ by drivers
  • Kerb crawling in the UK is only an offence when soliciting women for prostitution
  • Debate follows the murder of Sarah Everard by Met Police officer Wayne Couzens, who kidnapped her as she was walking home on March 3

Ex-Labour deputy leader Harriet Harman has called for motorists to lose their driving licences if they follow women too closely in the street.

In an interview with Good Morning Britain, the MP said that even girls walking home from school were being ‘hassled’ by drivers.

Questions have been raised about women’s safety, following shocking revelations about the murder of Sarah Everard by serving Met Police officer Wayne Couzens, who was later sacked after his arrest.

Couzens was jailed for life yesterday for the young marketing executive’s kidnap, rape and murder – after staging a false arrest while Miss Everard was walking home in south London on March 3.

Labour MP Harriet Harman has called for kerb crawling women in the street to be made into a criminal offence

Speaking to GMB this morning, Ms Harman said: ‘[Men are] following too closely a woman when the man knows she doesn’t want to be followed.

‘Even schoolgirls walking home at night get followed and hassled. It ought to be a criminal offence. If you kerb crawl a woman in the street, you should get your driving licence taken away.

‘Men would pretty soon not do that, if they knew that they would lose their driving licence.’

Under the Sexual Offences Act 2003, kerb crawling is only defined as offence when soliciting women for prostitution. It can lead to drivers being disqualified and having their cars impounded.

In March, Ms Harman called for the law to be toughened up to include kerb crawlers who harass women and girls in the street going about their business.

The veteran MP, who has served in the House of Commons since 1982, also called for urgent reform of the Met Police following Couzen’s conviction and demanded the resignation of Met Commissioner, Dame Cressida Dick.

Ms Harman told GMB News: ‘Women are entitled to know that the police are there to protect them, that they are there to help them and that there is no question of them being a threat to them.

‘Sarah Everard was tragically killed in March and the Metropolitan Commissioner has shown no sign of understanding that she needs to lead from the front and take action.

‘Therefore, I think if this action is going to be taken to restore confidence, Cressida Dick can’t lead it. So that’s why I am saying she should step aside.’
