Mexico bans sale of e-cigarettes

Mexico banned the sale of e-cigarettes on Tuesday, via a presidential decree.

Mexican president Andrés Manuel López Obrador’s order outlaws the sale of e-cigarettes, just the latest anti-vaping policy he’s enacted. The country previously banned the import of e-cigarette devices.

He has also slammed the products for clearly being marketed to young people. During Tuesday’s announcement, he showed a photo of a pink vape.

“Look at the color, the design,” López Obrador said, according to AFP.

Mexico banned sales of electronic cigarettes and other vaping devices on Tuesday because of concerns about their health effects, the government announced.

President Lopez Obrador said it was a “lie” to claim that e-cigarettes are a safe alternative to inhaling tobacco smoke.

“The vapors are also harmful for health,” added Lopez Obrador.

The announcement came on World No Tobacco Day, an advocacy day started by the World Health Organization aimed at informing the public about the dangers of tobacco use.

President López Obrador’s campaign against vaping has been fueled by a WHO report which found e-cigarettes “contain nicotine and other toxic substances that are harmful to both users, and non-users who are exposed to the aerosols second-hand.”

The WHO said last July that more than 30 other countries had banned the sale of e-cigarettes.
