Ministry of Defence advertises for a £40k-a-year chief to oversee threat of nuclear warheads at a ‘genuinely exciting time’ (but candidates will be quizzed on sexual relationships and drinking habits)

  • The MoD is offering £40k for a role to help reduce nuclear threats facing the UK
  • The successful candidate will be responsible for countering nuclear terrorism
  • To asses reliability, the vetting process will ask about drug use and relationships

The Ministry of Defence is advertising for a new chief to oversee the threat of nuclear warheads.

The £40,000-per-year role at the Defence Nuclear Organisation is largely focused on mitigating ‘threats across the nuclear spectrum’.

The vacancy, based at the MoD’s Whitehall HQ, comes amid uncertainty over the nuclear threats from Russian president Vladimir Putin following the Ukraine invasion.

Due to the top secret nature of the job, candidates will be expected to reveal all in a very thorough vetting process – to make sure they are not at risk of bribery or blackmail.

According to the posting on the Gov.uk website, the DNO oversees ‘all aspects of nuclear business within the MoD’, including submarines, nuclear warheads and ‘day-to-day nuclear policy’.

‘The programme delivers technical aspects across a number of areas, working to counter nuclear terrorism; combat nuclear proliferation; research nuclear arms control; and support nuclear related international treaties.’

Job hopefuls will be quizzed on their ‘wider family background, relationships and influences, past experiences, health, sexual relationships.’

Plus also their ‘behaviour, drinking habits, experience of drug taking, financial affairs, general political views, hobbies and foreign travel.’

Candidates are advised that vetting officers ‘are very experienced and will not be easily shocked or surprised’ by answers.

Those hoping to apply need to have experience working with highly classified information, and a full UK drivers licence.
