This is the moment a cow stuck in a river was rescued by a farmer and his tractor – despite a specialist fire crew and a digger being sent to help.
The cow was left stranded after slipping down the bank into the River Derwent, near Howden, East Yorkshire, on Saturday.
Firefighters struggled to help the the animal from the river after 1,300lb bovine got stuck in mud.
And after a one-and-a-half hour rescue operation, the cow was eventually saved by the famer and his tractor, dragging the animal – safely held in a harness – to safety.
The cow was eventually pulled from the water after an hour and a half rescue operation
The bovine was dragged to safety after crews travelled from as far as 50 miles away to save the animal
Footage shows the moment the bovine was rescued, with firefighters assisting by getting into the river to ensure its safe recovery.
A harness attached by the fire service and a tractor used to lift the roughly 1,300lb beast which was reunited with the farmer at the end of the ordeal.
An unnamed eyewitness said some crews had travelled from as far as 50 miles away to help the stranded cattle.
He said: ‘A specialist fire brigade heavy lifting team, which is basically a lorry with a tractor unit on, came from right across the River Humber, but the local farmer got there first with his tractor to lift the stricken animal out.
‘Crews did manage to get a harness underneath her which did help to lift her out.’
The rescue follows another cow’s liberation just days before – when firefighters spent over three hours cutting a cow out of a tree in Chilbolton Common, Hampshire.
The rescue comes after another cow had to be saved after becoming trapped in a tree for over three hours
Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service (HIWFRS) joked that the incident was ‘udderly ridiculous’
Two photos of the animal posted by the fire service showed front and rear views of the trapped cow as it stood waiting to be freed.
HIWFRS animal rescue tactical adviser Mark Compton said: ‘Within Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service, we have specialist crews trained in dealing with animal rescues.
‘The animal rescue crew from Winchester worked to release the cow by enlarging the hole and manipulating the animal’s head until it was free from the tree.’
