A shocking video shows a phone battery explode into a huge fireball while a technician is carrying out repairs.
CCTV at the repair shop shows the repairman chat with his partner while apparently carrying out a heating test on the device on Monday (March 21).
He leaps back off his seat in shock as the battery continues to burn with an orange flame on the table.
The repairman seems to recover from the shock quickly and stands up to check the fire isn't spreading, before inspecting the burn to his arm.
Named in local papers as Manoel Jeronimo Lira, the technician said he was carrying out a heating test on the device at his shop in the city of Sobral, Brazil, when it exploded.
He explained the phone battery overheated and exploded during the repair because the device's owner failed to mention the battery was a third-party brand and was already fully charged.
Despite the scare and burns to his arm, he said he has fully recovered and put it down to "just one of those things".
Manoel said: "It is okay, it was just a work incident. Thank God I didn't have many injuries, just burns on my arm."
He added: "It’s a warning to other phone technicians to always pay attention and to ask the customer if the battery is fully charged. It’s all right now."
Phones exploding is not unheard of and, in some cases, the results can be tragic.
A schoolboy was killed in a classroom when his mobile phone exploded while it was plugged into a charging outlet in a shocking incident in October last year.
Meanwhile, a young woman tragically died after dropping her smartphone in the bath while it was charging.
In many countries outside the UK, it is legal to have mains power sockets fitted in bathrooms.
