An iconic photo of two football fans getting hit by a ball has gone viral, with one pictured inadvertently ‘dabbing’ while the other is clinging on to his sausage roll as his soup is sent flying.

Queen of the South photographer Colin Johnstone managed to capture the exact moment that a female spectator and Elgin City fan Kevin Russell had a ball hurtling straight towards them during Saturday’s match against Queen of the South.

The woman hilariously looks like she is ‘dabbing’, which is a dance move for those unfamiliar with the term, or mimicking that meme of Canadian rapper Drake as she attempts to dodge the speeding ball.

Meanwhile, the football appears to have hit Mr Russell smack in the middle of his chest as he is trying to enjoy his snack. But he seems to be undeterred, grasping onto his sausage roll as he is still mid-bite.

However, he was not so fortunate when it came to the soup he was holding in his other hand. It appears to have been knocked by the ball, spraying red soup all over his white T-shirt.

The image has been circulating widely on Twitter since Elgin City Football Club shared it, having already racked up almost 16,000 likes, reported metro.co.uk.

Even Scottish Professional Football League’s ball supplier Mitre got involved, tweeting: ‘Happy to have played a part.’

Fellow fan Lewis MacNeacail noticed the ‘heroic’ determination Mr Russell had in continuing to eat his sausage roll, posting: ‘He is, heroically, refusing to give up eating. Hero.’

Fans have been quick to comment on Mr Russell’s determination to continue eating, jokingly dubbing him a ‘hero’

Another commented on the soup disaster, writing: ‘Took me a minute to work out what was happening here. I thought he was being sick because, to start with I didn’t see the ball! Thought it was the logo on his tee shirt.’

A different fan jokingly said about the woman’s stance: ‘Poor goalkeeping from the lady. Routine palm away stops that IMO.’

Rob Alban was one of many who referenced the similarity her pose had to the ‘dab’, commenting: ‘Not sure that’s an appropriate time to dab. Perhaps stopping the ball would have helped him.’

Elgin City Football Club went so far as to attempt to track down supporter Mr Russell and offer him some free refreshments to make up for his lost meal.

It tweeted: ‘Arguably the best picture ever taken at a football match. We would love to know the name of this supporter so he can get some free refreshments at our next match.’

In their home game, Elgin City lost 2-0 against Queen of the South in the Group Stage of the Scottish League Cup, according to the Press and Journal.

The Borough Briggs side will next play at home against East Fife as they open their League Two season this Saturday.
