Mum was so drunk she didn't realise toddler daughter had fallen 20ft out of open first floor window but is spared jail

A MUM who was so drunk she didn't realise her toddler had fallen 20ft from an open window has been spared jail.

The 40-year-old was "oblivious" that her child had hit the tarmac on the street below – despite the tot's screams.

The little girl was left with severe bruising and a fractured eye socket after the incident at a property in Northampton last May.

The child had managed to clamber through the window – used as a spot for the mum to smoke from – despite the woman being in the same room.

Prosecutors said the the youngster was "very lucky" not to have suffered more serious injures.

The woman, who cannot be named to protect the identity of her daughter, pleaded guilty to allowing a child to come to injury while being in charge of them.

She was handed a 10 month prison sentence, suspended for 18 months at Northampton Crown Court on Monday (14/6).

Sentencing, Judge Rupert Mayo said: "Because of your lack of care and because you chose to drink, she was able to fall from a first-floor window.

"If you ever need a reminder of what you did to your child, ask your barrister for the photos of her injuries attached to the case files.

"They would be deeply shocking to any parent."

The court was told the mother was the only adult in the house at the time of the incident before police and ambulance crews were called to the scene.

She was nearly four times the legal drink-drive limit when officers breathalysed her with a reading of 127 micrograms of alcohol per 100ml of blood.

The legal drink-drive limit is 35 micrograms.

Police also reported the lock on the window had previously been removed and cigarette butts on the windowsill suggested it was regularly used as a spot to smoke.

The toddler also didn't have a cot or a bed at the property either.

A prosecutor told the court: "Any sober and responsible adult would never let their child go anywhere near that window.

"The reality is this defendant was so drunk she didn't even realise her baby had done what she did."

The woman was also ordered to complete 30 days of rehabilitation work and was said to be "deeply remorseful" for her actions.

Detective Constable Gill Craddock, of Northamptonshire Police, said: "This was a truly appalling case of neglect where a mother was so intoxicated she failed to protect her own child from very serious injury.

"Her irresponsibility has had devastating consequences for her child and I hope this sends out a warning to any parent who gets drunk while in charge of a child."
