‘Chief Twit’ Elon Musk is ‘working on plans to charge for video content’ – potentially opening a door to challenge PornHub – as he tells users he wants to make the network ‘the most accurate source of information on Earth’
- Twitter is already home to a thriving exchange of pornographic imagery, which comprises about 13 percent of all content on the site
- Musk said that his new mantra for the platform is to make it the ‘most accurate source of information on Earth, without regard to political affiliation’
- The billionaire Tesla CEO finalized the $44billion Twitter takeover last week
- The new move could see creators receiving a sum of money for their video content – allegedly up to $10 – from each user who pays for their clip, with Twitter also taking an unspecified cut
Elon Musk is allegedly working on plans to charge users to view video content on Twitter – which is already one of the only social media sites that allows nudity and pornography to be posted.
The proposed move would mean creators who already post explicit clips will be able to put up their own paywalls, charging as little as $1 for people to be able to view their X-rated footage.
This comes after the billionaire Tesla CEO finalized his $44billion Twitter takeover last week.
Earlier today, Musk said that the plan for his social media platform is to make it the ‘most accurate source of information on Earth, without regard to political affiliation.’
He revealed his grand ambitions after a user was confused to see a fact check box pop up after clicking on a tweet published by the White House’s official account.
Twitter is already home to a thriving exchange of pornographic imagery, which comprises about 13 percent of all content on the site, internal company data showed earlier this year.
According to the Washington Post, an internal Twitter email revealed the plans: ‘When a creator composes a tweet with a video, the creator can enable the paywall once a video has been added to the tweet.’

The creator would then receive a sum of money – allegedly up to $10 – from each user who pays for their video content, with Twitter also taking an unspecified cut.
According to a mock-up of what the feature may look like, the paywalled content was obscured, with a lock icon and the message ‘view for $1.’
This is just one of the new overhauls Elon Musk has proposed as his massive social media shakeup begins to take place.
But Twitter staff and users alike have already voiced concern that this feature will mainly be used to promote adult content – potentially rivalling PornHub, which sees millions of users a month.
The move may also seen Twitter becoming like OnlyFans – where adults can pay to subscribe to their favorite explicit content creators, in many cases for a personalized pornographic experience.
One Twitter employee told the Post that the feature ‘would probably be used at least partly for adult content.’
Twitter was contacted for comment, but did not immediately respond.
It comes as a new report last month showed that cryptocurrency and ‘not safe for work’ content, which includes nudity and pornography, are the highest-growing topics of interest among English-speaking Twitter users.
Sensitive media on Twitter is blurred by default, however this is not necessarily the case with all adult content on the app.
And the line with explicit content has been toed recently on the social media platform.
Some major advertisers – including Dyson, Mazda, Forbes and PBS Kids – suspended their marketing campaigns or removed their ads from parts of Twitter in September because their promotions appeared alongside tweets soliciting child pornography.

Some of tweets include key words related to ‘rape’ and ‘teens,’ and appeared alongside promoted tweets from corporate advertisers, according to reports.
Like all social media platforms, Twitter bans depictions of child sexual exploitation, but it permits adult content generally.
Musk also said earlier this week: ‘Twitter speaks to the inner masochist in all of us.’
This comes after the CEO confirmed that it will cost users $8 a month of have a verified blue tick next to their account.
Musk added that those who sign-up for the system will get ‘priority in replies, mentions and search, which is essential to defeat spam/scam, ability to post long video and audio, half as many ads, and paywall bypass for publishers willing to work with us.’
The world’s richest man previously mulled a $20 per month blue tick verification fee, but appeared to lower the cost following criticism from horror author Stephen King.
Musk is looking to make good on his promise to make the social media platform turn a profit by introducing a charge for Twitter users wanting to keep their verification badge.
