My son was dumped in isolation at school because of his HAIRCUT… his teachers said it was extreme

A DAD has told how his son was dumped in isolation over a HAIRCUT after teachers dubbed the style "extreme".

James Cullen said his 12-year-old son Jacob opted for blond highlights and a partially shaved skull for his back-to-school haircut earlier this month.

But, hours after Jacob walked into St Andrew's Catholic School in Leatherhead, Surrey, dad James got a call.

Teachers dubbed the trim "unacceptable", and told James his son was in isolation.

After Jacob was kept apart from his friends every breaktime for a week, James requested a meeting with the school.

The dad says his punishment was disproportionate – and wouldn't have been issued at all if Jacob was a girl.

James told Surrey Live: "In the meeting I had with the school, his head of year suggested that he shave his head.

"I don't believe for a minute if he was a female pupil that they would have said that."

The school has denied asking Jacob to shave, and said the rules about "extreme" fashion is clear.

Jacob's isolation stopped on Tuesday, with teachers keen to "draw a line under the matter.

But James said: "I don't want to draw a line under it, I've just started.

"What we need is consistency, the rules need to apply across the board.

"I've dropped Jacob off at school every morning for the past seven months, and I've seen lots of female students with bleached blonde hair."

Headteacher Alan Mitchell said all uniform rules are equal between boys and girls.

The school's website states: "Extremes of fashion in clothing, footwear and hairstyle are not permitted.

HAIR AND SQUARE?

"Hair colour and style must be appropriate for school. Dyed hair is not acceptable. Number 2 is the shortest cut allowed."

Mr Mitchell said the rules are clear and consistent.

It comes as a mum branded her son's school "ridiculous" after he was banned from classes because his "neat and tidy" haircut is too short.

Kelly Smith was shocked when she found out teachers had ruled her 14-year-old son Jason Kirkbride's short back and sides "inappropriate".

And mum Hannah Clews was left furious by teachers who put her son in isolation after ruling the at-home haircut she gave him was "too short".

Niall Clews, 12, was struggling to see through his curly locks during lockdown – and with barbers shut, Hannah got out the clippers herself.

The mum-of-two, who lives in Rowley Regis, West Midlands, buzzed it to a grade two to one on the back and sides and after giving it a snip on the top, she was pleased with her handiwork.

But when Niall returned to school the next week, he was told his at-home cut was "too short" and not in line with school rules, Hannah, 33, claims.
