Navy sailor allegedly murdered his wife and set house alight with baby inside

A navy sailor has been accused of allegedly killing his wife in a fit of jealous rage before setting their home on fire.

According to police, George Dodson, 23, allegedly murdered his wife with a hammer and set his Connecticut home on fire while his baby son was still inside.

The baby boy was in his crib on the second floor of the home when the fire was started and was rescued by firefighters.

The 13-month-old baby was then transported to a local hospital to be treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

The house fire in New London, Connecticut, was first responded to at 10.30pm on Wednesday when fire crews found a 22-year-old woman on the first floor amid the flames and heavy smoke they attempted to extinguish.

And despite being taken away from the home by firefighters, the woman was declared dead at the scene. Her identity is remaining anonymous until her next of kin has been contacted and informed.

Dodson, a navy sailor, confessed to the crime as he encountered police in the backyard of his home.

"I did this. I killed her," Dodson said, according to court records.

Court documents show that Dodson said he started the fire, and that he allegedly admitted jealousy was the motive for killing his wife.

"We opened up our relationship and she found another man she loved more and I could not stand the thought of it, so I killed her," Dodson allegedly told authorities.

Dodson was subsequently arrested and charged with several felonies including murder, criminal attempt at murder, criminal attempt at arson murder, first-degree arson, tampering with evidence, reckless endangerment, and cruelty to animals.

Dodson appeared in court on Thursday and is currently being held on a $3million bail.

Navy spokesperson Lt Seth Koenig confirmed Dodson was a second-class petty officer who joined the Navy in 2017 and had been assigned to the USS Newport News since 2019.
