Democratic New York Rep. Antonio Delgado on Sunday lent his voice to a growing bipartisan chorus calling for a probe of the bombshell admission by a top aide to Gov. Andrew Cuomo that his administration hid data on coronavirus deaths in nursing homes.
During a behind-closed-doors meeting with Democratic lawmakers last week, Cuomo confidante Melissa DeRosa made the stunning admission that the state withheld the actual figures for fear they could be used against them by federal prosecutors, according to an audio recording of the sit-down reviewed by The Post.
“Politics should never come before people’s lives,” tweeted Delgado, who represents the Hudson Valley. “The Secretary to the Governor’s remarks are beyond troubling and warrant a full investigation.
“Thousands of New Yorkers lost family in nursing homes to COVID-19, a pain made worse by the inability to comfort their loved ones in their final hours,” continued Delgado in a second tweet. “They deserve answers and accountability.”
In calling for the probe, Delgado joined a bipartisan wave of criticism over the latest scandal surrounding the Cuomo administration’s approach to handling the pandemic in nursing homes.
The Cuomo administration has also been battered for a since-rescinded 2020 directive barring nursing homes from turning away residents on the sole basis of a positive coronavirus test — even as the governor repeatedly acknowledged that seniors are among those most susceptible to the virus.
Cuomo has not held a press conference since Wednesday — the day before the bombshell audio was revealed.
