Olympics chiefs are set to distribute 160,000 condoms to athletes at Tokyo Games despite sex being banned due to Covid-19.

Giving out condoms has been a long-running tradition at the Games.

This year, the 11,000 athletes taking part are being discouraged by the organising committee from having sex.

The measure is a precaution to prevent the spread of Covid-19.

It is understood that the International Olympic Committee will provide 160,000 condoms for the Games, which were delayed for a year due to the pandemic, meaning there would be around 14 condoms for each athlete.

The committee released a 33-page guide book for the athletes, urging them to socially distance and ‘avoid physical contact, including hugs and handshakes.’

The committee began doing this as early as 1988, partly to prevent the spread of HIV.

In a statement, the IOC defended the move, saying: ‘Our intent and goal is not for athletes to use the condoms at the Olympic Village but to help with awareness by taking them back to their own countries.’
