Our council refused to pick up our rubbish over hanging bunting – the bins are overflowing… it's ridiculous | The Sun

A COUNCIL refused to empty the bins on one of their routine streets after its residents hung bunting.

The bins on Bath Street in Syston, Leicestershire, are overflowing with rubbish after the waste collection was missed on June 3.

Residents claim their street was skipped because the bunting hanging over the road was considered to be an obstruction.

But some say the same bunting had been strung up in the past and there was no issues.

One woman who lives on Bath Street said: "For the bulk of the lockdown we had bunting up across the street and it was never a problem then and this is the same bunting," she said.

The bunting was hung back up again across the street in celebration of the Queen's Platinum Jubilee.

The resident claims the council did not notify those living on Bath Street.

She says they only found out after her husband called the council twice to get to the bottom of it.

The woman told Leicester Mercury: "We weren't given any notice beforehand that we couldn't have bunting up and it had been there throughout the whole lockdown but that didn't seem to be a problem then."

The woman claims when her husband called for the first time,he was told a collection would take place the next day – but they never showed.

In a follow-up phone call, they were told Serco – the waste collection firm – wouldn't be coming.

She says: "We were told that Serco stipulated that they would not attend if there was any bunting up, but nobody was made aware of that – we were only told because we rang."

The woman says the whole saga has "angered and upset" the street's residents as their bins are overflowing with rubbish.

They fear their collection will be missed again due to a rule that excess household waste will not be collected.

A Charnwood Borough Council spokesperson said: "Our refuse vehicle was unable to access Bath Street on Friday June 9.

"In cases where the vehicle cannot gain access, crews return on the next scheduled collection date.

"If residents have concerns about having excess waste by their next collection date, they may wish to consider disposing of it at one of the three tips in the borough to ensure their bins can be collected on Friday June 17.

"We would like to apologise for any inconvenience caused."
