Oxford University has been slammed for advertising for a lecturer who needs to have a PHD that pays less than a cleaner or Amazon driver.
The job teaching history at the prestigious uni pays just £19,743 per year.
Dr George Severs – who works as a lecturer in the subject – fumed: ‘Less than £20,000 for a job which requires you to have a doctorate.
‘This is too common at Oxford and Cambridge and it’s insulting.’
One student – studying for a PHD in history – said: ‘£1 less than cleaner at National Library of Scotland.’
Barbara Czarnecka ranted: ‘Amazon workers get paid more.’
Amazon delivery drivers get about £115 per day – £27,600 a year – or £108 per day – £24,960 per year – for factory workers.

The Oxford University college insisted the advert had the wrong words and was only part-time
Alex Wright added: ‘That’s less than I get as a temp doing data entry in a far cheaper part of the country than Oxford.’
The fixed-term Lectureship in History is at Oxford University’s New College and the job starts in October.
The job description on jobs.ac.uk reads: ‘The person appointed will be expected to provide tutorial teaching for eight hours per week over the three academic terms.
‘And to provide administrative and pastoral support for the cohort of undergraduate and graduate History students.
The post carries a stipend of £19,743.
‘The appointment will be pensionable under the USS scheme, the Fellow contributing 9.8 per cent of the stipend and the College 21.4 per cent.

The advert also attracted some criticism on Twitter over the pay that was being offered
‘In addition, tutors are entitled to free lunch and dinner at the common table when this is available, a research and book allowance £960 per annum.
‘The post comes with an entertainment budget of £160 per annum.
Most lecturer jobs at UK universities require applicants to have studied the subject to PHD level.
Michael Kremer Professor of Philosophy at University of Chicago said’ ‘Lunch and dinner are included.
‘But the fellow has to give over almost £2,000 to the pension scheme. No accommodation.’
Bec McNeil said: ‘How many hours of preparation and marking would be a reasonable expectation per hour of teaching?’
One former Oxford Uni lecturer said: ‘Speaking only for myself, when I was there.
‘I found that at a minimum a solid two hours of preparation and marking was needed for each hour of tutorials.’
A New College spokesperson said; ‘Thanks for bringing this to our attention.
‘The advert should read ‘part-time’ as it involves only eight hours of teaching per week and some administrative and pastoral support and has now been updated to reflect this.’
