Packed UK beach evacuated as police and coastguard scrambled to ‘major incident’

    Bournemouth beach was evacuated earlier today due to a "major incident".

    Chaotic scenes of several ambulances, fire engines and police had been seen at the beach, but no confirmation as to what had happened had been given.

    A spokesman for Dorset Police said as news of the incident became public knowledge: "Dorset Police received a report at 4.32pm on Wednesday 31 May 2023 from the ambulance service requesting assistance on the beach off Bournemouth Pier.

    "Officers are currently in attendance clearing the area to assist HM Coastguard and the ambulance service, who are dealing with the incident."

    Several eyewitnesses on social media report seeing two air ambulances flying overhead, as well as police jet skis searching the waters in the area.

    Twitter user @Eemanq posted a video from the scene showing multiple people standing around looking concerned.

    He said: "Bournemouth beach major incident, rescue operation is underway.

    "Situation is grave and tense."

    Another user, posting a picture of the air ambulances, tweeted: "Went for a walk along the beach and it's closed off at the pier approach in #Bournemouth beach.

    "Policeman on the radio saying a major incident, and was visibly shook.

    "Bodies in the water some are saying."

    There are also several claims that bodies were pulled from the waters, but this has not been confirmed by in any official way by police or the ambulance service.

    Another video from the scene shows emergency services performing CPR on someone, as a yellow temporary fence was put up to hide the scene from the general public.

    An air ambulance was seen leaving the area at 5.47pm, but it was not clear if anyone was on-board it at the time.

    The area was cleared of emergency services just after 6pm, several eyewitnesses claimed.
