Paul Burrell says Queen would be 'very upset' about Netflix series

Paul Burrell says the Queen would be ‘very upset and unhappy’ about Sussexes’ Netflix series that will create fresh ‘conflict’ with William – and claims show is ‘carefully directed’ by couple ‘to make them look like victims’

  • Queen would be upset at Harry saying ‘so much’ and showing ‘private things’
  • Added the show will create fresh ‘conflict’ between the duke and Prince William

Princess Diana’s former butler Paul Burrell has said the Queen would be ‘very upset and unhappy’ about Harry and Meghan’s new Netflix series.

Burrell, 64, served as a footman for Her Majesty and was later butler to Diana for 10 years until her death in 1997.

Speaking on ITV’s Lorraine this morning in response to the release of the first three episodes of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s show, he said the Queen, who died aged 96 in September, would be ‘very upset and unhappy that Harry was saying so much, showing so many private things.’

He added that the show likely to create fresh ‘conflict’ between the duke and his elder brother Prince William and has been ‘carefully directed’ by Harry and Meghan to ‘make them look like victims.’

The first three episodes of the Netflix series feature previously private photos and self-shot ‘video diaries’.

The first episode opens with an introductory monologue by the Duke, filmed from Heathrow Airport’s opulent Windsor Suit.

It was shot at the end of their last duties before Megxit in March 2020.

The show also revealed clips from Diana’s infamous interview with Martin Bashir, even though William had insisted it should never be aired again.

Mr Burrell said: ‘Talk about exploiting the princess’s image and talk about showing images which William does not want to be seen again on Television. There is bound to be conflict between the two boys.’

Speaking to presenter Lorraine Kelly, he added: ‘This couple could have had it all, Lorraine.

‘They would have been at the heart of the Royal family now as the King’s family. They would have been protected by the police and royal palaces and royal security.

‘They would have been phenomenal for the Royal Family. Instead they chose a commercial route.

‘They chose to cash in. They chose the money above everything else. And I think that is what this is all about.

I don’t think you are going to see them at the Coronation.

‘It think the King will be absolutely furious and Wiliam will not be happy about all this exploitation. And I think they should stay in America.’

He said the show would not have been made if Diana were still alive.

‘She would remind Harry of his position. She would say that you are born into this family.

Speaking on ITV’s Lorraine this morning in response to the release of the first three episodes of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s show, he said the Queen, who died aged 96 in September, would be ‘very upset and unhappy that Harry was saying so much, showing so many private things’

‘I am proud that my sons are part of this family. And she was proud to be part of the royal family. The royal family is bigger than any one person.

‘Even the Queen. And I think she would be very upset and unhappy that Harry was saying so much, showing so many private things.

‘Showing so many private images, like the child looking at Granny Diana, i thought that was very carefully orchestrated and very private.

‘They have said their truth now. They’ve done it. But of course you have to wait for the exclusives to come in the book because the publishers haven’t paid millions of pounds for nothing.

‘There has got to be something a little sharper coming later. So this is only the first salvo.’

Diana died in a car crash in Paris in 1997, while Burrell released a tell-all memoir, A Royal Duty, in 2003.

It led to a rift with Buckingham Palace, with Prince William and Prince Harry calling the book a ‘cold and overt betrayal’ of their late mother.

Harry and Meghan have branded their engagement announcement in 2017 an ‘orchestrated reality show’

Burrell made millions from the claims he made in his books about his life with Diana and also secured lucrative deals on reality shows such as I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here

In a 2003 statement unprecedented for its strength of feeling, William, then 21 and also speaking on behalf of his younger brother, showed his deep pain at Mr Burrell’s revelations in his tell-all book.

The Princes said Diana would have been ‘mortified’ at his actions if she were alive today and called on him to put an end to his disclosures.

Prince William said in the statement released by Clarence House: ‘We cannot believe that Paul who was entrusted with so much could abuse his position in such a cold and overt betrayal.

‘It is not only deeply painful for the two of us but also for everyone else affected and it would mortify our mother if she were alive today and, if we might say so, we feel we are more able to speak for our mother than Paul’.
