A three-year-old boy was ‘nearly blinded’ after being attacked by an ‘aggressive’ peacock at a zoo.

Becky Gittoes went to Paignton Zoo in south Devon with her husband and two young children for a fun-filled family day out on Saturday.

But things quickly took a turn for the worse as her son Ezra was left covered in blood after a peacock attacked him in a family picnic area just an hour into their trip.

Becky said the ‘aggressive’ bird charged at her young son and clawed at his forehead, claiming that Ezra ‘could have been blinded’ if the peacock had struck just a few inches lower.

The concerned mother explained:‘The peacock was roaming around. Ezra was nowhere near it.

‘Suddenly it just charged at Ezra out of nowhere and clawed his forehead.

‘It was horrible. If it had been a couple of inches lower Ezra could have been blinded.’

They rushed Ezra to a local hospital where he was treated for his injuries with antibiotics.

Becky said: ‘He is going to be left with a scar.

Peacocks (pictured at Paignton Zoo) are aggressive and territorial birds and although they do not frequently attack people, they but have been known to chase people for their food

‘No one from Paignton Zoo has contacted us since the attack.

‘There is no signage warning us that peacocks are aggressive.’

But the zoo insisted that signs do tell visitors that peacocks can sometimes peck.

Peacocks are known to be aggressive and territorial birds and will attack anyone who gets too close to their nests, according to Sciencing.

Peacocks do not frequently attack people but have been known to chase people for their food.

The territorial birds have even been known to attack their own reflections, thinking it is another peacock facing off with them.
