People vow to boycott McDonald's for life after 'disgraceful' behaviour of staff

FAST food fans have vowed to boycott McDonald’s for life after staff's “disgraceful behaviour” towards a homeless man.

The shocking incident took place at the chain’s restaurant on Great Homer Street in Liverpool on Friday just after 8pm.

A mum who had been buying food at the drive-thru for her son during Storm Arwen had offered to buy an “absolutely frozen” homeless man a meal.

But when she ordered him food and a drink, the woman from Wirral claims staff refused to serve her.

The mum-of-two told The Liverpool Echo: “We drove from West Kirby over to Liverpool to go for a meal on Smithdown Road and we had to stop off at the McDonald's near to Scotty Road to get the baby a meal.

“My son is autistic so has set meals which he will eat and he wouldn’t eat anything from the restaurant so we had to pick up his chicken nuggets and chips Happy Meal on the way.

“On Friday, it was that horrible storm so it was absolutely freezing, pouring down with rain and when I’d gone further around the bend on the drive-thru I noticed a homeless man stood there absolutely frozen.”

The woman, who wishes to remain anonymous, said that she asked him if he would like something to eat and “persuaded him to agree”.

He eventually asked her if he could have a hot chocolate, warm apple pie and a doughnut – but when she requested them at the window she was left shocked at the staff's reply.

The mum claimed: “As I got to the window I asked the girl if I could add his items onto what I ordered but she said 'sorry my manager said we’re not allowed to add on to your order’.

“I said ‘excuse me?’ and she replied the same again – that her manager had told her that she is not allowed to add anything on to my order.

“I had agreed to buy this man who was freezing something hot to warm himself up and in fact had to persuade him to get a hot drink and hot food in his body and they were refusing to let me get it for him.

“I told them I want what I am paying for and if I had to go through the drive-thru again then I would. I asked the girl to get the manager because now I was infuriated.

“The manager refused to come and see me and the young girl at the window kept apologising as it was her manager’s decision.”

'ABSOLUTELY DISGUSTING'

She said that at this stage the homeless man started crying “begging” the staff to let him have a hot drink.

She claims the manager eventually agreed to give her a  hot chocolate and the doughnut – but continued to refuse the apple pie.

She said: “It’s absolutely disgusting and has played on my mind ever since.

“I hate to see anyone go hungry. It shouldn't even be happening, it's 2021."

A spokesman for the restaurant said it has "no policy in place restricting service to homeless people" but staff made a decision on safety grounds.

Now many social media users have said they will boycott the chain after the “disgusting” incident.

One woman said: "Wow think this has put me of McDonald’s for life how can a fast food company refuse someone who wants to buy food whether it’s for a homeless guy or not DISGUSTING!!!!"

Another added: "Shame, someone trying to do a good deed. I hope the homeless man found somewhere to shelter that night."

A third fumed: "Shocking. Disgraceful behaviour by McDonalds staff. This branch should be boycotted."
