A 29-year-old man who died of a stab wound to the heart while sitting in a south London park last week has been pictured for the first time.

Kalabe Legesse was the victim of what is thought to have been a random attack on Friday, December 30 as he was ‘minding his own business’ in Peckham Rye Park.

He suffered serious stab injuries and was discovered at 8.24pm near a cafe off Strakers Road in the park.

Despite the best efforts of London Ambulance Service and London’s Air Ambulance crews, the 29-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene half an hour later.

Metropolitan Police have launched an investigation as the hunt for the assailants continues

A post-mortem has since found the cause of his death to be a haemorrhage and a stab wound to the heart.

Mr Legesse’s family was informed and are being supported by specialist officers.

Police officers described the incident as a ‘brutal and senseless attack’.

Officers are now appealing for information and are searching for two suspects who were seen fleeing the park on pedal cycles in the moments after the ‘brutal and senseless’ attack.

Detective Chief Inspector Katherine Goodwin, from the Met’s Specialist Crime Command, said: ‘Kalabe’s family and friends have been left devastated by his death, which occurred after a brutal and senseless attack when he was simply sitting in the park, minding his own business.

‘We have been working tirelessly to identify those responsible and are keen to hear from anyone who was in or around the park, particularly in the area near the café and playground, at about 8pm.

‘At this early stage in the investigation we believe we are looking for two suspects riding pedal bikes, who fled the scene towards Peckham Rye.’

After the stabbing, a New Year’s Eve run scheduled to take place in the park was cancelled.
