Plane brawl erupts after passenger refuses to push up reclined seat

Shocking video footage has shown a man being attacked by his fellow aeroplane passengers after refusing to put his seat in an upright position for take-off.

The assault took place on board a Thai Smile Airways flight as it was being readied to leave Bangkok for Kolkata in India, as reported by Indian media company NDTV.

Flight attendants had asked all passengers to adjust their seats and fasten their seatbelts before the plane left the runway but one man would not comply, arguing that he needed to be in a reclined position because he had backache.

He then challenged the crew to report him to the captain if they wanted to take the matter further.

But, before there was an opportunity for the captain to get involved, a group of annoyed passengers on the plane decided to try and bring the situation to an unsavoury end themselves.

In the footage, several people are filmed aiming repeated blows at the man, who tries to defend himself while crew members also intervene to restore order.

Thai Smile Airways expressed their regret at the fracas on their official Twitter account @THAISmileIndia, while adding that the incident had been "taken care of" with support provided to the people affected by it.

The full statement read: "Thai Smile Airways feels sorry for this. We reaffirm that the incident has been taken care of as we followed the flight safety procedures in accordance with international standards. Our flight crews have already provided support to the persons affected by an incident."

No serious injuries were reported as a consequence of the brawl but it did lead to the flight being delayed.

All those that were engaged in the fight were also banned from ordering alcohol during the flight.

The matter is now being investigated by the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security.
