Police hunting woman, 24, who failed to arrive at work at Lancashire cocktail bar five days ago find a body in a local river

  • Shannon Canning was last seen leaving her Lancaster home on Friday morning
  • Police have confirmed they’ve found a body believed to be her in the River Lune

A body has been found during the search for a missing Lancashire woman who has not been seen since failing to turn up to work five days ago.

Shannon Canning was last seen leaving her home in Keswick Court, Lancaster, in the early hours of Friday morning and concerns were raised after she didn’t arrive at her job at Tipple Bar in the city centre the next day.

The 24-year-old’s disappearance was described by police as ‘out of character’ and Lancashire Police said it was growing ‘increasingly concerned’ for her welfare.

The force drafted in specialist divers to search the River Lune and Lancaster Canal in the city, while officers on the ground scoured the city centre and the Ridge Estate.

Sadly Lancashire Police has now revealed a body believed to be Ms Canning was found in the River Lune near the village of Halton, upstream of Lancaster, on Wednesday.

In a statement released on Wednesday, Lancashire Police said: ‘Sadly, officers searching for missing Shannon Canning have an update, following a body recovered from the River Lune.

‘We can confirm that we were called today, May 24, at around 4:20pm to a report that a body had been found in the River Lune, near Halton.

‘Specialist search teams have subsequently attended the area and can sadly confirm that the body of a woman has been recovered.

‘Although formal identification has yet to take place, we believe the body to be that of missing Shannon Canning.

‘Shannon’s family have been made aware of this sad development and our thoughts are with them at this upsetting time.’

Ms Canning was last seen on Friday, May 19, and was reported missing the next day after failing to turn up to work in Lancaster City Centre.

She also failed to get in contact with friends or family after leaving her home in the early hours of Friday.

Police revealed on Tuesday they were searching the city centre and the Ridge Estate while divers searched the River Lune and Lancaster Canal – two prominent water features in the area where she disappeared.

In a previous update, Lancashire Police said: ‘We are asking for your help again as we look to find Shannon Canning who is missing in Lancaster.

‘She hasn’t been in contact with any of her friends and family since leaving her home.

‘We have a dedicated search and investigation team in place who are working alongside partners from other agencies to find Shannon as quickly as possible.

‘You will see an increased presence of police officers and specialist resources in Lancaster as we search for Shannon, in particular around the Ridge estate and city centre.

‘A number of premises will be secured as we continue to piece together Shannon’s movements.

‘Divers from the North West Underwater Search Unit will be searching in the area, while the Lancaster Area Search and Rescue team and the Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service are assisting with land and water searches.

‘This is a missing from home enquiry currently but all lines of enquiry, including searches of specific addresses, speaking to members of the public, studying CCTV footage and digital enquiries, are being carried out.’
