Police investigate cause of baby’s death after child is airflifted to hospital following incident at house

- Police say the child, whose age of gender has not been revealed, died in hospital

Police have today launched an investigation into the ‘unexplained’ death of a baby following an incident at a house in County Durham.
Emergency services were called to a home in Chilton, a village east of Bishop Auckland, at around 2pm on Wednesday.
The infant was airlifted by paramedics to the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle-upon-Tyne but died shortly after arrival.
Police confirmed an investigation is under way to establish the circumstances surrounding the death, which is being treated as unexplained.
It has not been revealed how old the baby was or if the child was a boy or girl.
A spokeswoman for Durham Constabulary said: ‘Police were called to an address in Chilton shortly before 2:30pm on Wednesday, February 16.
‘Paramedics also attended, and a baby was airlifted to the Royal Victoria Infirmary, in Newcastle.

‘Sadly, the baby died shortly after arrival. Enquiries are ongoing to establish the circumstances surrounding the baby’s death, which is currently being treated as unexplained.’
A North East Ambulance Service spokesperson said yesterday: ‘We received a call at 2:08pm this afternoon to reports of an incident at a private address in the Ferryhill area.
‘We dispatched two ambulance crews and requested support from the Air Ambulance.’
A spokesman for the Great North Air Ambulance said: ‘We mobilised at 14.16 and landed at 14:27. A patient was then flown to hospital at 14.36.’
