Police launch murder investigation after man is gunned down in south London

  • Police raced to Erith following reports of shots fired at 8.50pm on Thursday 
  • Officers found a mortally wounded man who was declared dead at the scene  

Police have launched a murder investigation after a man was gunned down last night in south London. 

The victim was found mortally wounded by police in Hillside, near Pembroke Road in Erith. 

A Scotland Yard spokesperson said police responded to reports of shots fired at 8.50pm. 

Police and paramedics battled to treat the man who died at the scene a short time later.

A spokesperson said: ‘Police were called at approximately 20:50hrs on Thursday, February 9. to reports of shots fired in Pembroke Road, Erith.

‘Officers and London Ambulance Service attended.

‘A male – no further details – was found a short distance away in Hillside, suffering a gunshot injury. Despite the best efforts of the emergency services he died at the scene.’ 

Police are working on identifying the victim so they can inform his next of kin. 

So far, nobody has been arrested in connection with the murder. 

The Met Police warned that road closures would continue in the area while forensic officers searched for evidence.  

The spokesperson added: ‘Anyone with information that could assist police is asked to call 101 or tweet @MetCC and quote CAD7135/9Feb. You can also provide information anonymously to the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.’
