Victoria Police said in a statement an adult had left the car running with the 11-month-old baby inside, when an unknown man jumped in the driver’s seat and drove off.

The car was last seen travelling east on Cheltenham Road near Corrigan Road, police said.

Police said the man who took the car was in his 50s or 60s, about 178 centimetres tall, with a skinny build and short hair. He was last seen wearing black shorts, shirtless and carrying a piece of red clothing.

Victoria Police released CCTV images of the man, as well as a picture of a car similar to the one stolen.

They said there was a significant search underway for the man, but asked that anyone who saw the vehicle or who had information about it call triple zero immediately.
