A policewoman who was today convicted of common assault for attacking a pub doorman now faces being thrown off the force.
Police Constable Karen Canwell, 37, will now be subject to a Northamptonshire Police misconduct investigation after the Detective Chief Inspector said her conduct fell ‘way below’ expectations.
She was also ordered to pay a £1,609 fine by magistrates at Loughborough Magistrates’ Court today.
Canwell was off-duty and at the King Edward VII pub in Rushden, Northamptonshire when a fracas broke out on December 11 last year.
The court heard that the serving police officer attacked the pub doorman twice before she was arrested by colleagues who were then were called to the scene.
Northamptonshire Police said today that PC Karen Canwell was found guilty of common assault at a two-day trial, following the incident in Rushden last year.
The incident took place in the evening after a disturbance took place at the King Edward VII pub in Queen Street.

Northamptonshire Police said: ‘The disturbance moved out onto the street with PC Canwell, off-duty at the time, assaulting a member of door staff by striking him to the chest on two occasions.’
Canwell was then arrested and interviewed the next day, before being released on bail pending her first court appearance.
She pleaded not guilty to the offence, but following a trial which took place at Leicester Magistrates’ Court yesterday and Loughborough Magistrates’ Court today she was found guilty and ordered to pay a £1,609 fine.
Detective Chief Inspector Andy Rogers, of Northamptonshire Police, said: ‘We are extremely disappointed that PC Canwell, a serving police officer here at Northamptonshire Police, has been found guilty of assault.
‘Her conduct has fallen way below what we would expect of any police officer in this Force.
‘PC Canwell was placed onto restricted duties whilst the investigation took place. A misconduct investigation will now take place led by our Professional Standards Department.’
