Prince Charles provokes fury for horse tweet on anniversary of Diana’s death

Prince Charles has provoked the fury of some royal fans after sharing a message about ornamental horses on the 24th anniversary of his ex-wife's death.

August 31 marked the anniversary of Princess Diana and her then fiancé Dodi Al-Fayed's death in a car crash as they tried to escape the attention of paparazzi in Paris in 1997.

The official Twitter account of Clarence House posted two tweets on the day, neither of which mentioned Diana.

One thanked people for coming to visit Clarence House over the past month, while another asked royal fans how many horses they could spot along Clarence House’s Horse Corridor on Google Arts.

Some people thought the posts, especially the latter, were a tad insensitive given the importance of the date.

One wrote: "24 years today Diana, Princess of Wales died. She has two children for you and you are asking people to count horses today of all days.

"Have you called your sons to see how they are doing or is counting horses more important? #RIPDiana."

While a second said: "the 31st? The day Princess Diana died, you post this?

"RIP the Queen of Hearts."

"Would have liked to see a tribute to Diana on her anniversary rather than a thank you for @ClarenceHouse!," a third posted.

A fourth said: "Today is all about the one and only Princess Diana .. so glad Harry is just like her but stronger."

Representatives for Clarence House have been approached for comment.

People wishing to remember and pay their respects to Princess Diana were granted special access to the recently unveiled statue at Kensington Palace.

The public was given a two hour window to visit the memorial.

Historic Royal Palaces (HRP) announced last week "we will be opening that up, freely available, for passers-by or anybody who wants to stop and take a moment on that Tuesday, specially for the anniversary."
