A phone call that Prince Harry received from Kensington Palace on Halloween changed the lives of the prince and Meghan Markle forever.
During the early period of their romance, the couple had tried to keep their budding relationship under wraps, and they went to a Halloween party in Canada wearing masks so that their fellow attendees would have no idea who they were.
But it was at that party the pair found out that news of their relationship was about to become public knowledge, reports the Mirror.
Harry and Meghan had met on a blind date in 2016 after being set up by a mutual friend, but it was another few months before the world knew that the future Duke and Duchess of Sussex were a couple.
Meghan was living in Toronto and still working as an actress in TV drama Suits, although she had visited Harry in London on several occasions.
But in October 2016, Harry flew the other way, visiting Meghan in Canada sometime around Halloween.
Meghan was active on social media and she posted a picture on her Instagram account when Harry was staying with her, according to the Sun.
As their relationship had grown stronger, the future royal couple started venturing into the outside world more often, and quickly discovered that people in Meghan's Toronto neighbourhood weren't that interested.
When Halloween arrived, they wanted to go out to celebrate, so they came up with a cunning plan, according to unauthorised biography Finding Freedom.
Authors Omid Scobie and Carolyn Durand tell how they attended a big costume party wearing Venetian-style masks, meaning other partygoers didn’t know they were rubbing shoulders with a prince.
The royal reporters write: “They especially didn't feel like spending Halloween weekend in hiding, as there was much to celebrate.
"Some four months into their relationship, they were madly in love and eager to take part in the fun of one of their favourite holidays, [so on] the evening of October 29, with Harry in town, the couple decided to go to a big costume party being thrown at Soho House in Toronto."
Harry's cousin Princess Eugenie was also at the party with her future husband Jack Brooksbank, and the two couples were having a fun time until the prince received an unexpected phone call.
"A cocktail or so into the party, they were both feeling relaxed, absorbing the Halloween spirit," write the biography’s authors.
"It was possibly the perfect night out – until they received a call from one of Harry’s aides at Kensington Palace. It wasn't good news."
A newspaper had found out about the couple’s bombshell relationship and was going to go live with a story the following day.
It was the start of a whirlwind five years that has seen Harry and Meghan get married, have two children, step down from the Royal Family and start to carve out a celebrity life in California.
