Prince Philip had typically witty response to young boy insulting him on DofE

The late Prince Philip was well-known for his dry sense of humour and Prince William has now shared the story of his sharp response after a cheeky boy fired a quip at him as he drove past.

Philip died on April 9 this year, just a couple of months away from his 100th birthday,

The Duke of Edinburgh’s funeral then took place eight days later, with attendee numbers limited by COVID-19-enduced restrictions.

Now, members of the Royal Family have reflected on the life of the patriarch in new BBC documentary, Prince Philip: The Royal Family Remembers.

William revealed that his grandfather had once been unknowingly mocked by a young man embarking on the Duke of Edinburgh scheme that Prince Philip had himself created.

The prince claimed: “He stopped and wound down his window and said, ‘good morning, how are you getting on?’

"To which the smallest young chap at the back turned round and effectively said, ‘jog on Grandpa’!”

Although William confessed that the insult was even less friendly than he described, he noted that Philip was unflustered, saying: “The youth of today!”

It was one of a number of funny stories told about the life of the Queen’s husband, who was well-known for his dry sense of humour.

The Duke of Wales remembered some of the last words he shared with his father, when he was making plans for Philip's 100th birthday celebrations, which were set to fall in June.

Clarifying to the hard-of-hearing Duke what they were discussing, Charles said: “We’re talking about your birthday, and whether there’s going to be a reception.?

He recalled that Prince Philip was typically sardonic in his response, joking: “'Well, I’ve got to be alive for it haven’t I?'?

“I knew you’d say that,” replied Charles.
