Home Secretary Priti Patel has called on the new Metropolitan Police boss to sort out the failing force with his ‘100-day plan’ in her valedictory letter as a Minister.
Ms Patel is expected to be removed as Home Secretary next week but has written to incoming Scotland Yard Commissioner Sir Mark Rowley outlining her expectations for his tenure.
She wrote to Sir Mark on Friday, saying: ‘I expect the Metropolitan Police under your leadership to get the basics right and provide the first-class service expected of it.
The Metropolitan Police must learn from the “appalling mistakes of the past”, the Home Secretary has said in a letter to new commissioner Sir Mark Rowley. It was announced in July that the former counter-terrorism policing chief would replace Dame Cressida Dick following her resignation, and in the letter Patel refers to the need to restore “trust and confidence”
‘I also expect you, as Commissioner, to promote better leadership and higher standards at every level throughout the force.’
Sir Mark is set to replace Dame Cressida Dick on September 12 after she was ousted by London Mayor Sadiq Khan.
In her 1,000-word letter, Ms Patel outlined how Britain’s largest force must respond better to ‘burglary, robbery and acquisitive crimes’.
A 115-page report by former police watchdog Sir Tom Winsor last week found Mr Khan committed an ‘abuse of power’ by forcing Dame Cressida out of her job earlier this year.
