Vladimir Putin has put the world on red alert after he said Russia will continue to pay increased attention to boosting its nuclear forces and will mass begin supplies of sea-based Zircon hypersonic missiles. Putin used an address to mark today’s Defender of the Fatherland public holiday to insist Russia would continue equipping its troops with advanced equipment as the war in Ukraine continues. In reference to nuclear missiles based on land, sea and in the air, he said: “As before, we will pay increased attention to strengthening the nuclear triad.”

Putin also said that for the first time, SAMRAT intercontinental ballistic missiles, which are capable of carrying multiple nuclear warheads, would be deployed this year.

“We will continue mass production of air-based hypersonic Kinzhal systems and will start mass supplies of sea-based Zircon hypersonic missiles.”

The latest terrifying comments from the Russian President come on the eve of the one-year anniversary of his country’s brutal invasion of Ukraine.

They also come two days after he used a State of the Nation address to announce Russia would suspend the New START treaty, its last remaining arms control agreement with the US, which limits each country’s deployed nuclear warheads.

  • Russian mercenaries signing up for Ukraine are told ‘we are at war with the West and UK’

Russian mercenaries captured in Ukraine have said they signed up to fight after being told they were at war with the West – including the UK.

In a world exclusive for the Daily Mirror, Defence Editor Chris Hughes spoke with two prisoners of war at a secret location in Ukraine.

The paper describes the men, a convicted killer and a man jailed for brawling, as recruits for the feared Wagner Group of Russian mercenaries.

Wagner leader Yevgeny Prigozhin, once dubbed “Putin’s chef”, reportedly met the men himself when he flew to their prisons and promised a new start with 200,000 Rubles a month – around £2,200.

The prisoners turned fighters described seeing comrades slaughtered in battle. It’s understood to be the first time a British newspaper has interviewed Wagner Group combatants. Both men had their faces covered to protect their safety should they be released.
