Russian state TV has mocked Britain’s ‘opulent’ celebration of the Queen’s platinum jubilee, claiming the event is a distraction from Downing Street parties and a general decline in living standards brought about by its sanctions against Vladimir Putin.

‘The UK, which as a consequence of its sanctions against Russia is bracing for power cuts, has found the money for an opulent celebration of the Queen’s platinum jubilee,’ said the evening news on Kremlin-controlled Rossiya-1 channel in a report from London.

‘The reign of Elizabeth II has seen the final collapse of the British empire.’

Rossiya-1 said former colonies in the Caribbean now wanted to ditch the queen as head of state and were markedly anti-British, with demands for apologies and reparations for slavery.

A ‘greater threat to the realm’ was Sinn Fein’s election victory, said the report, suggesting this paved the way for a united Ireland.

‘The imperial functions of the Anglo-Saxon world long ago passed to the United States, even though Boris Johnson is trying to revive British influence on the European continent by actively interfering in events in Ukraine,’ stated the sour report.

‘[The aim is to] deflect attention from domestic problems like Downing Street parties during lockdown and a general decline in living standards.’

The comments on power cuts were made in reference to UK government sources quoted saying that up to six million homes could see their electricity rationed for a number of months under a worst-case scenario.

Although the UK uses very little oil or gas from Russia, it would be competing with other European countries for supply if Putin blocked all exports to the continent.

A No10 spokesperson made clear that the government was examining a range of scenarios and that electricity rationing was unlikely.

The threat has prompted Business Secretary Kwasi Kwarteng to ask Britain’s coal-fired power stations to delay their planned closures.

Russian state TV regularly attacks and threatens the UK with military action.

On Wednesday, Russian state TV talking heads said World War Three had already begun and warned that Britain and the US will be made to ‘pay a heavy price’ for interfering in the war with Ukraine.

Russia One’s Olga Skabeyeva effectively declared war on the UK, US and NATO and advocated for a fresh Russian military campaign extending beyond Ukraine’s borders.

Bombastic Kremlin-controlled propaganda broadcasts are designed to inspire patriotism in Russian citizens and turn the narrative against the West.

Firebrand television anchorman Vladimir Solovyov – known as ‘Putin’s Voice’ – has threatened to use nuclear Zircon missiles to bomb Britain.

He also said that Moscow will only stop its military push when its forces reach Stonehenge.

The news comes amid ongoing fighting in the city of Severodonetsk, now largely under Russia control. Capturing it entirely would put Putin’s forces on the cusp of taking Luhansk province, one of his key war aims.

Ukrainian forces in the region are taking heavy losses, with President Zelensky recently admitting Ukraine is loosing up to 100 troops a day in the Donbas region. But the fighting is taking a huge toll on Russian forces as well.

Though their tactics have improved since the botched effort to take Kyiv, Putin’s generals are facing Ukrainians who are better armed and prepared than they were in the opening weeks of the war.

Western officials briefing journalists on Wednesday estimated that Russian forces have been ground down to around half the strength they had before the war started – when between 150,000 and 190,000 troops were massed on the border.

More than 1,000 tanks have been destroyed by Ukraine, the West believes, which Russia is struggling to replace as sanctions deprive the country of key components needed to build more.

Russia is pushing to capture the eastern city of Severodonetsk which will put Putin’s forces on the cusp of taking the Luhansk region, while Ukraine is counter-attacking to the south

Russian forces are expected to keep advancing through the next days and weeks – targeting the city of Lysychansk after Severodonetsk falls, which is located just a few hundred yards away across the Donets River.

If they are able to take Lysychansk then the next targets will be Slovyansk and Kramatorsk, located some 35 miles to the West.

A fresh counter-attack is currently underway in the south, towards the city of Kherson which has been occupied since the early days of the war.

Ukrainian tanks and armoured personnel carriers have been filmed crossing the Inhulets River in recent days, and have pushed Russian defenders back from several small towns on the other side.

Ukraine has shown the ability to mount successful counter-attacks in areas where Russia is weak, such as around Kyiv just before Putin withdrew his troops and to the north of Kharkiv last month – pushing Russia back to its own border.
