Rail strikes: How industrial action will affect trains on Saturday

Rail strikes to paralyse Britain again: Train staff walk out again tomorrow with routes shut across nation as passengers are warned to stay home and engineering works hit London

  • National Rail strikes will affect services again on Saturday as train staff walk out
  • Disruption expected on London Underground, Overground and Elizabeth line

Train services across Britain will be hit by strike action yet again this weekend, with a limited service operating only on some routes on Saturday and some lines shut.

Members of the Rail, Maritime and Transport union (RMT) at 14 train operators will walk out as the long-running dispute over pay, jobs and conditions continues.

Major operators such as Avanti West Coast and LNER will only be running trains between 7.30am and 6.30pm, while the Gatwick Express will have no service at all.

East Midlands Railway warned its passengers to ‘only travel by rail if absolutely necessary’ while Great Western Railway said a ‘very limited service’ would run.

Those operators not involved in the dispute such as Hull Trains, Merseyrail and ScotRail will see no major impact, but their services could be busier than normal.

While there is no London Underground strike this weekend, there are a range of closures on the Tube and Overground network due to engineering works.

Here, MailOnline looks at how this week’s rail industrial action will affect you:

When is the next National Rail strike?

Strikes affecting 18 train operating companies will go ahead again tomorrow (Saturday), despite the RMT calling off its walkout at Network Rail.

The walkout will be the second strike on national services this week after industrial action yesterday (Thursday).

And it will be the third strike affecting rail passengers this week, following the London Underground strike by the RMT and Aslef on Wednesday which ran into Thursday morning.

Which operators will be affected by the strike?

The strikes involve staff at 14 train operating companies, but 18 operators will be affected because Greater Anglia and Stansted Express are part of the same company; and Great Northern, Southern, Thameslink and Gatwick Express are also part of a different single company.

The following train companies will be affected by the strike:

  • Avanti West Coast
  • Chiltern Railways
  • CrossCountry
  • East Midlands Railway
  • Gatwick Express
  • Greater Anglia
  • Great Northern
  • Great Western Railway
  • LNER
  • London Northwestern Railway
  • Northern
  • Southern
  • Southeastern
  • South Western Railway
  • Stansted Express
  • Thameslink
  • TransPennine Express
  • West Midlands Railway

Which train companies are affected by the strikes?

These rail operators are not directly affected by the strikes, but will be indirectly affected because most have some minor amendments to their timetable and their services may be busier than usual:

  • Caledonian Sleeper
  • Elizabeth line
  • Grand Central
  • Heathrow Express
  • Hull Trains
  • London Overground
  • Lumo
  • Merseyrail
  • ScotRail
  • Transport for Wales

Will the London Underground be affected by the National Rail strike?

The London Underground will mostly be unaffected by the National Rail strike, although it will cause these stations across the Transport for London network to open late and close early on Saturday:

  • Wimbledon
  • Richmond
  • Clapham Junction
  • Liverpool Street (London Overground)
  • Twyford
  • Reading
  • Shenfield
  • Watford Junction
  • Paddington (Elizabeth line)

There will also be a series of closures on the Underground this weekend due to engineering works, which are as follows:

  • Circle line – No service on the entire line on Saturday until 8.30am

Which Underground lines will be running a normal service?

Transport for London expects to run a good service on the following lines on Saturday and Sunday: Bakerloo, Central, Jubilee, Northern, Piccadilly and Victoria.

There is also expected to be a good service on the Docklands Light Railway and Croydon Tram.

Will the Elizabeth line be affected by the National Rail strike?

There will be some service alterations on Saturday and Sunday.

On Saturday until about 6am, the westbound trains towards Reading and Heathrow which usually start from the mainline platforms at Paddington will be revised to start at Ealing Broadway.

All trains which serve the Elizabeth line platforms at Paddington will operate as normal.

Later on Saturday, the 11.59pm Heathrow Terminal 5 to Paddington train and the 0.14am Sunday morning train from Heathrow Terminal 4 to Paddington will not operate.

On Sunday until 7.45am, a reduced service will operate between Paddington and Ealing Broadway.

The first through trains will operate from Paddington at 5.57am to Heathrow Terminal 4 and at 7.48am to Reading, at 6.33am from Heathrow Terminal 4, 7.40am from Maidenhead and 7.54am from Reading.

Will any parts of the London Overground be closed this weekend?

Yes, there will be multiple closures across the Overground network as follows:

  • Saturday or Sunday – No service between Highbury & Islington and New Cross / Clapham Junction / Crystal Palace / West Croydon (including Night Overground on Friday and Saturday nights)
  • Sunday until 10.15am – No service between Hackney Downs and Chingford, and no service between Liverpool Street and Enfield Town / Cheshunt

How will the National Rail strike affect rail operators across Britain?

Here are the service details for each operator on Saturday:

AVANTI WEST COAST

Avanti West Coast runs services on the West Coast Main Line between London Euston, Birmingham Manchester, Liverpool and Glasgow.

On Saturday, it plans to run one train per hour from Euston to each of Manchester, Liverpool, Birmingham and Preston, with a limited service to Glasgow.

These trains will operate during limited hours, with the first train of the day departing Euston just after 7.30am and the last one from Euston departing just after 4pm.

Avanti said the significantly reduced timetable will mean North Wales, Shrewsbury, Blackpool, Edinburgh, Macclesfield and Stoke-on-Trent will have no Avanti services.

It added that major upgrade work is taking place between Carlisle and Scotland, so onward journeys towards Glasgow will take longer and involve a change – either onto a rail replacement bus, or onto another train taking a slower diversionary route.

Sunday is also expected to be affected – particularly in the morning, as services will start later.

C2C

On the c2c route, where trains run between London and Essex, the operator said the strike action will ‘not majorly impact c2c services’.
