New Year’s Eve sent the mercury soaring to 16.3C, smashing the previous record of 15.6C but Sunday will see the arrival of rain across most of the UK, with showers already falling in areas through the early hours.

Weather forecaster Louise Lear told viewers on BBC Breakfast they “might see a few sharp showers around” following a dramatic change in the weather.

She explained how cloud rolling in off the Atlantic overnight has already brought in showers overnight which have been falling in areas across the UK early on Sunday.

She added: “As we go through the day it is going to be an incredibly mild day, it is going to be a blustery day.”

But the weather expert warned how another batch of “persistent rain” will push in from the west from midday.

Ms Lear noted how this will be accompanied with gusts “in excess of 40mph in places” as she stressed the UK is set to be battered.

She added how that wind and rain will push its way steadily eastwards across the country while the rain is expected to contuse falling.

Sunday will see highs of 13C in London, 12C in Cardiff, 11C in Newcastle and 10C in Edinburgh.

UK Weather: Met Office forecast long spells of rain

The forecaster did note that despite the marked drop in the temperatures from yesterday, they are “above average” for this time of year.

Ms Lear added that as day turns to night, the rain in most areas will ease away but Scotland will hold onto the wet weather through the night, especially in western areas of the country.

But a bracing cold front will arrive overnight on Sunday and into Monday morning sending temperatures plummeting to a near freezing 3C in the far northern reaches of Scotland.

Monday morning will also see the mercury tumble to 9C in Cardiff, 8C in Liverpool, 7C in London and 6C in Norwich.
