THE call Richard Sherman's wife made to 911 is being investigated after a "combative" dispatcher told the reportedly suicidal NFL star's wife to "stop interrupting."
Sherman's wife made a frantic call to 911 saying that her husband was drunk and threatening to kill himself last week, hours before the NFL cornerback was arrested for trying to break into his in-laws' house.
In the call, which is being widely slammed online, the football player's wife, Ashley Moss, says she needs officers to come to her Washington home immediately, at one point saying, "this is a f***ing emergency!"
The dispatcher who was handling the call, which was obtained by KIRO, can be heard repeatedly asking for information in a way many deemed "unprofessional.
At one point, the dispatcher tells Moss, "stop interrupting me."
When Moss said again that she needed officers to her house immediately, the dispatcher said, "you need to stop telling me that" and "talking to me is not going to slow help down."
Police in Redmond, Washington, arrested Sherman, 33, for allegedly attempting to break into his in-laws' house early Wednesday morning.
DISPATCH CALL BEING INVESTIGATED
However, police in Redmond have attempted to distance themselves from the heat over the 911 call by clarifying that the King County Sheriff's Office will actually be conducting an investigation into the dispatcher's conduct.
"The Redmond Police Department has received a series of misdirected complaints following the release of 911 audio from last week’s arrest of Richard Sherman," Redmond police said.
"Online petitions and social media comments have raised questions about how the King County Sheriff’s Office handled initial 911 calls from unincorporated King County.
"Many have mistakenly associated those calls to the City of Redmond’s Communications Center, which is not connected to the King County Sheriff’s Office."
The statement goes on to say that King County Sheriff's Office "opened an administrative review of this matter that will take several months to conclude."
After Sherman's alleged attempted break-in, he was booked on burglary domestic violence charges, as well as resisting arrest and malicious mischief for damage to his in-laws' door.
Redmond police chief Darrell Lowe said the domestic violence charge was due to the confrontation with his in-laws, “not due to him physically assaulting a significant other."
The former San Francisco 49ers star is also being investigated for a possible DUI and hit-and-run, police told The Sun, after a car registered to Sherman was involved in a single-car crash involving a construction barrier.
The car fled the scene by the time officers arrived but it was later found abandoned and severely damaged in a parking lot off an exit along Highway 520, around half a mile from where he was arrested.
Nobody was injured in either incident and Sherman did not make it into his in-law's home, Redmond Police Chief Darrell Lowe said in a press conference.
