Rifle bird fails in his attempt to woo a partner with his dancing

He needs a wingman! Randy riflebird shows off his extravagant dance moves – but female is NOT impressed

  • The Victoria riflebird performed an elaborate mating ritual in north Queensland
  • He was filmed dancing like John Travolta in Saturday Night Fever for his partner
  • Unfortunately for the male, the female bird was unimpressed and flew off

This is the moment a randy bird performs an elaborate mating dance for an unimpressed female that promptly flies off in search of a better match.

The video was shared on the ‘Travel and Wildlife Photography’ page on Instagram by Australian residents Ray and Sue for their 25,000 followers.

The footage shows a Victoria’s riflebird (Lophorina victoriae) performing a mating dance for a female before apparently being rejected.

The young male demonstrated his dramatic Saturday Night Fever-style dance routine to his prospective partner who was quite unmoved by the performance.

As the male attempted to wrap his wings around the female, she flights left and escapes the unwanted attention.

Photographer and wildlife lover Sue said: ‘The video was recorded in February 2022. The Victoria Rifle Bird breeding season isn’t until September but the juveniles will often start practising early.

‘These birds are endemic to the highland rainforest of tropical North Queensland, Australia. They are in the bird-of-paradise family. They select a post such as a fallen tree and will dance on the same post for as long as it stands.’

Sue said living in Australia, they are surrounded by wildlife.

She said: ‘Apart from Australia, our favourite trips have been camping in the Maasai Mara in Kenya and the orangutans and tarsiers in Indonesia. Our wish list is now the Falklands and Madagascar.

‘We have day jobs like most people and save for our trips. One thing that helped us in the past was to plan our trip with a travel agent and we would make regular payments to them and pay the trip off before we left. This is a great idea if you have trouble saving!’
