A Georgia state trooper used the pursuit intervention technique — commonly known as the PIT maneuver — to nab the 21-year-old accused massage parlors gunman, according to a report.
Robert Aaron Long, 21, was reportedly driving south on Interstate 75 in Crisp County when he was outmaneuvered by the trooper who used the technique on the black 2007 Hyundai Tucson, Fox News reported.
Long was then taken into custody “without incident” and was being held in the Crisp County jail for Cherokee County authorities who were expected to arrive soon to continue their investigation.
The PIT maneuver, which “caused the vehicle to spin out of control,” is often deployed to end pursuits when the driver fails to stop and is deemed a danger, according to Crisp County Sheriff Billy Hancock.
Using the pursuit tactic, which was invented by an FBI cadet in 1992, the pursuing officer pulls alongside the fleeing vehicle and hits it behind its rear wheels while steering into its direction, causing it to spin out of control.
