President Trump’s personal attorney Rudy Giuliani on Thursday condemned the violent assault on the US Capitol as “shameful” – a day after calling for a “trial by combat” during a “Save America” rally.

“It was as criminal as the rioting and looting this summer which was not condemned strongly enough by the Left,” the former New York City mayor said in a tweet.

“This violence is condemned in the strongest terms. Our movement values respect for law and order and for the Police,” added Giuliani, who led the legal challenges to overturn President-elect Joe Biden’s victory, most of which did not hold up in court.

In a later tweet, Giuliani said: “Our cause is to obtain an honest vote and to end voter fraud before it becomes a permanent tactic of the enabled and media protected Democrat Party.

“Violence is rejected, condemned and counter productive. Antifa involvement is no excuse. It contradicts our values,” he added in the post, which Twitter labeled as “disputed.”

On Wednesday, Giuliani called for “trial by combat” while addressing pro-Trump supporters outside the White House, where the president again claimed the election was rigged and called for Vice President Mike Pence to do “the right thing” as Congress prepared to certify Biden’s victory.

Giuliani, who called the election results “fraudulent,” told the crowd:  “If we are wrong we will be made fools of, but if we’re right a lot of them will go to jail.”

He added: “So let’s have trial by combat,” a term from ancient Germanic law in which people settle disputes through armed duels.
