Russia is “in panic” as Ukraine’s counter-offensive saw it recapture its first village in the Luhansk region. Volodymyr Zelensky’s forces have in recent weeks made effort to recapture a good deal of the land taken by Moscow in the early stages of its “special military operation” in Ukraine.

These yesterday took control of the village of Bilohorivka.

This is just five miles from the city of Lysychansk and means Luhansk is no longer fully under Russian control.

The Guardian described the Ukrainian gain as a “small but symbolic victory”.

Zelensky said “the occupiers are clearly in panic”.

In his latest address, he stressed he was now focussed on “speed” in recaptured areas.

The President said: “The speed at which our troops are moving.

“The speed in restoring normal life.”

Serhiy Gaidai, Ukrainian Governor of Luhansk, added: “Luhansk region is right next door.

“De-occupation is not far away.”

He also told Reuters Ukraine has recaptured the town of Kreminna which, like Bilohorivka, is located on the northern approach to Lysychansk.

As Ukrainian forces have been pushing forward, intelligence reports have suggested Russia has started moving some military equipment to a safer location.

In its latest intelligence update, the UK Ministry of Defence said the command of Russia’s Black Sea Fleet has “almost certainly relocated” its KILO-class submarines from their home port of Sevastopol in Crimea to a location in southern Russia.

It noted: “This is highly likely due to the recent change in the local security threat level in the face of increased Ukrainian long-range strike capability.

“In the last two months, the fleet headquarters and its main naval aviation airfield have been attacked.”

The Ministry added that because of its recent setbacks in the going conflict in Ukraine, Russia’s Crimea base security “has now been directly undermined”.

Journalist Mikey Kay commented: “The irony of his massive miscalculation in Ukraine now threatens what Putin considered a strategic capability in Sevastopol.”
